Musician/Bandleader

A native of Syracuse, New York, John Spillett is one of Central New York’s most versatile professional saxophonists. John is an active jazz and contemporary music performer. An experienced saxophonist and vocalist, he has performed at approximately 2000 professional engagements, including jazz festivals, club dates, private parties, wedding ceremonies and receptions, church and funeral services, Broadway shows, and at the New York State Fair.

John has developed an extensive performing resume playing saxophone with many of Central New York’s finest professional groups, including The Central New York Jazz Orchestra, Salt City Jazz Collective, Mario DeSantis Orchestra, Stan Collela Orchestra, Jack Kreischer Orchestra, Syracuse New Music Society, Syracuse Concert Band, Dunes and the Del-Tunes, Alibi, New Day Band, Four on the Floor and many others. He has performed as a guest musician on several local television programs and has recorded with local artists including Tracey Tyler, Don Hook, Jerri Cali, and John Vona.

He is active in the Syracuse music scene as a jazz saxophonist, and has had performing experience in all styles of jazz from contemporary to Latin, and straight-ahead. John has performed with Chris Vadala, Tom "Bones" Malone, Rich Thompson, Joe Magnarelli, Byron Stripling, Jim Snidero, Allen Vizzutti, Todd Coolman, Bobby Shew, Lew Soloff, Frank Mantooth, Denis DiBlasio, Ed Shaughnessy, John Fedchock, Rick Montalbano, Phil Flanagan and Mike Melito.

As a bandleader, John formed his own successful jazz group, party band, and contemporary Christian duo. John’s jazz group has performed at many Syracuse area venues including Anyela’s Vineyards, The Sherwood Inn, Mirabeau Inn and Spa, Creekside Books and Coffee, Cora D’s, Syracuse Suds Factory, The Mandana Inn and many others. His party band has performed at numerous events including wedding receptions, private parties and corporate functions.

Currently, he remains active as a freelance saxophonist, bandleader, church musician, studio musician, and clinician. John continues to find inspiration in the music of legendary jazz saxophonist John Coltrane.
